Despite data lags, Allen said it's "highly likely" that US services exports to China in 2020 saw a severe decline amid the COVID-19 pandemic, considering the grim situation in travel and education.
In response to a question from Xinhua, Allen said he is hopeful that the decline in US education exports to China last year is only COVID-19 related, "but we shouldn't take that for granted.
""I think that American universities and colleges should really be marketing heavily in China," said Allen, adding that with a growing middle class, many of the young people in China are seeking to travel and study abroad, and American universities and colleges remain attractive for them.
"This is also the first time in six years that there has been a fall in dairy product exports to China in the December month," international trade manager Alasdair Allen said in a statement.
The large fall in dairy exports was a key factor in total exports falling NZ$149 million in December 2020 compared with December 2019, Allen said, adding dairy export values and volumes both fell in December, compared with the same month a year before.
