Located in Baileyville, Maine, the United States, St Croix Tissue was a bright spot in the small town for almost a century after it began making paper in 1906.
John Williams, president of the Maine Pulp and Paper Association, said that in today's digital age, demand for most grades of paper products continues to drop.
Maine 纸浆和造纸协会主席约翰·威廉姆斯表示,在当今这个数字化时代,大多数等级纸制品的需求仍在持续下降。
"(St. Croix Tissue) is bringing back what Maine was very, very strong in - the paper industry," said Maine Governor Paul LePage.
The potential for Maine companies to do export to China is vast "and this will obviously continue to be a very major focus area for us", said Wade Merritt, president of the Maine International Trade Center (MITC).
"Today is just a start of that, and we are looking forward to continuing the partnership and the work that we've been doing together," he said in an interview with China Daily at Maine International Trade Day on May 18 in Rockport.
As Northern New England's largest international business event, this year's event was themed "Global Trade's New Era: Accessing Asia", because "Asia is a growing market for Maine businesses, especially in the seafood sector, but others are also looking east," he explained.
In 2017, 2,262 Maine companies exported $2.7 billion in goods and services to 176 countries.
Exports to Asia totaled $769 million, accounting for 29 percent of the total, and China, Japan, and South Korea were the top three Asian destinations for Maine's exports.
"Obviously, China is a very important market for Maine; it's actually the third-largest export destination for Maine products, right after Canada and Germany," Merritt said.
"So, it's a very important place for Maine companies to do business and learn how to do business.
"Merritt introduced Invest in Maine, a partnership between the trade center and the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) formed to attract business investment and encourage job creation.
"Invest in Maine welcomed more than 15 delegations representing businesses, government officials, and academia from Europe and Asia during 2017.
Among them, three Chinese delegations from Fuzhou, Shanghai, and Anhui visited Maine.
"And we've been back a few times with Governor Paul LePage for trade missions in 2012 and 2015," he said, adding that the biggest result of the visits was getting access in China for Maine lobster and generating investment for the paper industry.
In 2016, International Grand Investment Corp, a US-based Chinese investment firm, invested $120 million in two new tissue-making machines for St. Croix Tissue in Baileyville, Maine.
Merritt emphasized that foreign direct investment has been a vital piece of Maine's economy, citing data from MITC's annual report.
It shows that foreign trade supports 180,500 (nearly 1 in 4) Maine jobs.
Since 2009, Maine jobs related to trade increased by 25.9 percent, while overall job growth was just 0.3 percent in the same time frame.
"We are relatively high in the number of Maine people who work for international companies. "
MITC helps Maine businesses enter and expand global markets for their products and services and also works to increase international student enrollment and foreign investment.
"From Maine lobsters to Texan oil, these exports represent paychecks for thousands of Americans across the country and tax revenues for local governments," said Allen, whose trade association represents more than 200 US companies that do business with China.

NEW YORK -- Hugh Reynolds, a lobster dealer from the northeastern US town of Stonington, Maine, was excited to learn that the China-US phase-one economic and trade deal came into effect on Feb 14.

该公司在其网站上表示:“我们的缅因州斯通宁龙虾由当地渔民新鲜捕捞,每日送达绿头码头,并及时进行加工、包装和运输。”
Annie Tselikis, executive director of the Maine Lobster Dealers' Association, said China accounted for 15 percent to 20 percent of the export value of US lobsters at the time.
There were roughly 4,500 licensed lobster catchers in the state of Maine and about 10,000 to 12,000 people are directly employed in the industry in June 2018.
But then some lobster dealers in Maine had to lay off workers to make ends meet.
Canadian fishermen catch the same species of lobster as American lobstermen do, who are based mostly in Maine.
Soon after China and the United States signed the phase-one deal that includes a lobster provision, US Senator Susan Collins called it a significant victory for Maine lobster in a press release.
Collins had been lobbying for the Maine lobster industry ever since the additional tariffs were imposed.
"Tselikis said in the statement that "China presents incredible opportunity for the coastal Maine economy and regaining access to that market is essential for our long term growth.
"While the Maine lobster industry is looking forward to re-entering the Chinese market, industry insiders know it is very difficult to regain its lost market share quickly.
Besides, Maine lobsters, Alaska crabs and California squid have seen their prices rise in the China market, and this has benefitted seafood exporters of other countries.
