From south to north, the project is divided into three sections — water diversion from the Yangtze to Chaohu Lake in central Anhui, the canal link between the Yangtze and Huaihe rivers and northward water transmission.
Construction of the Pinglu Canal, one of the major projects of China's new western land-sea corridor, began on Sunday in Qinzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.
With a total investment of 72.73 billion yuan ($10.5 billion), the Pinglu Canal will take about 54 months to complete.
Running 135 kilometers, the canal will start at Xijin Reservoir in Hengzhou and terminate in Luwu town in Lingshan county, where ships will be able to reach the Beibu Gulf via the Qinjiang River.
The canal project is mainly for shipping, but other functions will come with it, such as water supplies, irrigation, flood protection and aquatic ecosystem improvement.
The canal will shorten the voyage of goods entering the gulf in southwestern China by around 560 kilometers, with a depth that will allow a ship to carry 5,000 tons of cargo.
For areas along the new western land-sea corridor, the Pinglu Canal is expected to save more than 5.2 billion yuan in transportation costs annually.
The canal will be a new landmark in China's southwestm the first combined transport channel that is expected to bring multiple benefits in the economy, society, ecology and other aspects.
Minister of Transport Li Xiaopeng said China will strengthen the construction of land-sea intermodal transport hubs and land-based cross-border channels with all parties in the Pan-Beibu Gulf region, and support Guangxi to build the Pinglu Canal, which will be built later this year.
Stretching 140 kilometers and requiring an estimated investment of 68 billion yuan ($10.7 billion), the canal will link the Xijiang River, a major waterway in southwestern China, with ports in the Beibu Gulf.
Vessels on the middle and upper reaches of the Xijiang River can sail out to sea from the Beibu Gulf via the canal, a distance 560 km shorter than from Guangzhou Port in Guangdong province.
One of the major events that occurred during the pandemic was the blockage of the Suez Canal on March 23 by a carrier called the Ever Given, whose movement turned erratic due to a sandstorm, and ran aground across the narrow channel.
As the canal is the hub of Europe, Asia and Africa, and one of the key transportation routes between Asia and Europe, its blockage affected about 13 percent of the world's shipping volume, which passes through it.
For example, visitors could watch the scenery along the Grand Canal via equipment powered by intelligent interactive technology developed by digital tech company 360onefor, while opening mystery boxes at the booth of toy brand Pop Mart.
Based on the number of late-night food orders in summer and the density of restaurants, three hot spots emerged: Donghu Road in Quanzhou; the business district near the Grand Canal in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province; and a business district in Shenzhen.
Gao attributed the growth rate slowdown in July partly to the impact of unexpected logistics disruptions from the Suez Canal blockage in March, and the monthlong suspension of operations at Yantian Port in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, due to a local COVID-19 outbreak about two months ago.
In addition, the Suez Canal blockage and other factors have affected transportation capacity of major shipping routes and led to global rise in freight rates, said Zhao.
"The Suez Canal blockage in late March has prompted Chinese companies to explore new transportation options to reach their clients.
From south to north, the project is divided into three sections: water diversion from the Yangtze to Chaohu Lake in central Anhui; a canal link, and northbound water transmission.
Speaking about the Suez Canal blockage, Gao said China will work with other nations to smooth cross-border logistics issues so as to ensure the stability of the global industrial and supply chains.
As traffic in the Suez Canal slowly returns to normalcy, China should pay close attention to follow-up developments, he said.
Although the Suez Canal blockage has affected shipments of some Chinese enterprises, and caused fluctuations to a certain extent in related freight rates, the impact on China's foreign trade is sudden, short-term, and limited, said Gao.
As the Suez Canal is resuming traffic in an orderly manner, China will pay close attention to follow-up development, and will work with others to smooth cross-border logistics to ensure the stability of the global industrial and supply chains, according to Gao Feng, spokesman of China's Ministry of Commerce.
Although the blockage of the Suez Canal has affected shipments of some Chinese enterprises, and has caused fluctuations to a certain extent in related freight rates, its impact on China's foreign trade is sudden, short-term and limited, Gao said on Thursday.
Container ship refloated, but traffic normalcy not in sight, say expertsAlthough the giant container ship blocking the Suez Canal in Egypt was partially refloated on Monday (by 7 pm Beijing time), normalcy in shipping services might be possible only in about two to four weeks, experts said on Monday.
The 400-meter Panamanian-registered container ship, the Ever Given, ran aground last Tuesday, 115 kilometers north of the south entrance of the Suez Canal, and virtually blocked the vital crossroad for East-West cargo, which accounts for about 10 percent of the global seaborne trade.
The Suez Canal Authority said that the container ship has been partially refloated, but it may take another two weeks to one month before the busy waterway returns to normalcy, said Lin Guolong, director of the Logistics Research Center at Shanghai Maritime University.
Apparently, the inquiries reflect rising concerns about shipping uncertainties via the canal," said Zhou Shihao, founder and CEO of YQNLink, a Shanghai-based global intelligent logistics platform.
Concerted efforts needed from entire shipping industry to clear logjamThe cargo ship blocking the Suez Canal may cause a delay of three to five days in Chinese exports and temporarily affect international trade, as clearing the logjam requires concerted efforts from the entire shipping industry, said experts.
Despite the efforts made so far, the Suez Canal continues to remain blocked, holding up several vessels in one of the world's most important waterways.
The 400-meter container ship Ever Given ran aground on Tuesday, 115 kilometers north of the south entrance of the Suez Canal, a waterway vital for East-West cargoes and responsible for the movement of about 10 percent of global seaborne trade.
According to Lin, about 60 percent of the Chinese vessels from China to Europe and Africa, as well as more than 95 percent of regular liners between China and Europe cross the canal during their voyages, in an attempt to avoid the much longer trip around the southern tip of Africa.
Almost 19,000 ships passed through the canal in 2020, or an average of 51.5 ships per day, according to the Suez Canal Authority.
There are 1.2 billion metric tons of cargo moving through the waterway annually, and about 1.9 million barrels of oil are shipped through the Suez Canal each day, according to the Suez Canal Authority and Lloyd's List Intelligence.
If the traffic jam at Suez Canal extends to weeks or even a month, shipping between Asia and Europe will be hit with freight rates set to soar, according to Zhou.
Even if the Ever Given gets refloated and towed away in the next three to four days, Lin believes it may take between two weeks to one month for the Suez Canal to return to normalcy.
He said some foreign trade companies have opted to "bypass" the Suez Canal and instead utilize land transportation in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Dammam in Saudi Arabia for delivering goods in the Middle East.
As the first stop in Shandong for the Beijing-Kowloon Railway and sitting on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal linking the north and the south, Linqing is a key gateway for "Shandong to reach the western region, and for Shanxi and Hebei to link with the outside in the east".

Although freight rates have edged down a bit after the Chinese Lunar New Year, the unexpected Suez Canal blockage in March caused a new round of capacity shortages and higher freight costs, experts said.
The COVID-19 outbreak and the Suez Canal incident have indicated there is an urgent need to strengthen existing supply chains, while wider adoption of digital technologies would help upgrade shipping services, said Xu Kai, chief information officer of the Shanghai International Shipping Institute.
