Top sportswear brands such as Nike, Adidas and domestic ones including Anta and Maia Active have developed yoga-inspired athletic products to bank on the opportunities brought on by rising fitness activities including yoga, Pilates, frisbee, pickle ball and camping.

One of the sports gaining momentum is ultimate flying disc — more commonly known by the product's brand name, Frisbee.

Xiaohongshu, a lifestyle opinion-sharing social platform in China, established ties with the country's sports administration, and launched the National Ultimate Frisbee League last year.

With the recent emergence of outdoor camping and frisbee activities, outdoor down jackets as sportswear have emerged increasingly popular in China, with down clothing for skiing and mountain climbing becoming something of a fashion.

Moreover, hotel and restaurant consumption is expected to shift to new scenes in the post-pandemic era, such as camping and frisbee activities, giving rise to new consumption scenarios.

Light outdoor sports including citywalks, frisbee, flag football, paddle board, cycling and kayaking have become popular experiences among young tourists.

Flying discs are known throughout most of the world by the registered trademarked name "Frisbee".

China's suddenly popular frisbee sports industry is expected to enter a rapid growth stage in the next two years, and the supply side should be fully prepared to foster the development of the sector, industry experts said.

In 2021, notes related to frisbee on Xiaohongshu were six times that of 2020.

The top cities with the greatest number of frisbee fans were Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen in Guangdong province and Chengdu.

According to the report from online technology media platform 36 Kr, frisbee has become one of the most popular sports for young people in 2022; while Chinese news portal Jiemian reported that frisbee has attracted over 1 million fans in China so far.

Yu Jin, one of the people in charge of frisbee-related content on Xiaohongshu, said,"The epidemic has greatly spurred people's longing for outdoor sports, and frisbee, as a sport that is easy to learn, beginner-friendly and contains social attributes went viral.

The development of the frisbee industry in China in the past few months has achieved what had been achieved in a few years for other sports.

On Aug 25, Xiaohongshu announced strategic partnership with the American Ultimate Disc League, a world-class frisbee league, becoming AUDL's exclusive event broadcast platform and official content community partner.

It will also provide support for an audience of more than 100 million for frisbee competition-related content, and plans to cooperate with at least 30 frisbee events in the coming year.

Xue Zhixing, senior frisbee industry expert, said,"The next two years will be the rapid growth stage of China's frisbee industry.

"After dinner, our child joined others in a frisbee game, played with a remote-controlled car and went skateboarding while we relaxed in the tent.

It has increased the popularity of light sports and trendy sports such as Frisbee, camping and cycling, as well as workout using online fitness programs that are available on social short-video platforms such as Douyin.

Ren Jing, 34, an online fitness influencer and a part-time trainer, has played Frisbee with her friends three or four times a week on soccer fields or nearby parks since August.

"Frisbee is affordable and offers flexibility as to when and where to play," said Ren, "That explains why it has become a hit as a fitness activity nationwide so quickly. "

Ren added that playing Frisbee has helped boost her competitiveness and team spirit, encouraging her to engage with people with the same interests and passions.

The 13th Beijing Olympics City Sports and Cultural Festival, which ran from Aug 6 through Nov 5, combined camping with outdoor activities such as a swimming race, a triathlon, a 10k race, sunrise yoga, morning jogging, curling and a Frisbee match.
