Clean energy trend presents opening to boost ties with S. American nationsChina Three Gorges Corporation, the world's largest hydropower producer, is stepping up efforts to make its Brazilian subsidiary a top-tier clean energy generator.

The city has so far successfully attracted major cooperative projects, such as an offshore wind and solar power integration demonstration project with the Three Gorges Group, marking the nation's first tripartite model combining wind, sunlight, and fishing farms.

The shipping throughput via the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydropower project on the upper stream of the Yangtze River, reached a record high of 172.34 million metric tons in 2023, said its operator China Three Gorges Corporation on Thursday.

The Three Gorges project is a multi-functional water-control system, consisting of a dam measuring 2,309 meters long and 185 meters high, five-tier ship locks on the north and south sides, and 34 turbo-generators with a combined power generating capacity of 22.5 million kilowatts.

The city has so far successfully attracted a slew of major cooperative projects, such as a groundbreaking offshore wind power integration demonstration project with the Three Gorges Group, marking the nation's first tripartite model combining wind, light, and fishing farms.

China Three Gorges Corporation, the developer of the hydropower plant, which started commercial operations in June 2022, said the facility has a total installed capacity of 720,000 kilowatts, and can meet the power requirements of more than five million people.

- The total cargo throughput via the ship locks at the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydropower project, hit a new record in the first half of this year, the Three Gorges Navigation Authority said Saturday.

During this period, the Three Gorges ship locks operated 5,469 times, facilitating the passage of 21,132 vessels.

The Three Gorges ship elevator operated 2,206 times, allowing 2,232 vessels to pass through, with a total throughput of 2.57 million tons in the same period.

The Three Gorges project is a multi-functional water-control system, consisting of a 2,309-meter-long and 185-meter-high dam, five-tier ship locks on the north and south sides, and 34 turbo-generators with a combined generating capacity of 22.5 million kilowatts.

Since the Three Gorges locks opened to trial navigation in June 2003, the volume of freight passing through them has increased rapidly.

The first hydropower project along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor-the Karot hydropower station-closed its diversion tunnel gates on Saturday and started to impound water, which will enhance regional connectivity and the local economy, said its operator China Three Gorges Corp. With most construction work of the station completed, the project is the first large-scale hydropower project backed by the Belt and Road Initiative and is expected to go into operation in 2022 as scheduled, the operator said.

Once completed, consumers in Pakistan will enjoy cheaper electricity from this basic project, said Noorul Arifeen Zuberi, senior consultant of the China Three Gorges South Asia Investment Ltd. Luo Zuoxian, head of intelligence and research at the Sinopec Economics and Development Research Institute, echoed his views and said the project has taken advantage of the local situation and is a good example of exploring sustainable methods in a developing country.

Under such circumstances, listed new energy operators such as China Three Gorges Renewables (Group) Co Ltd and China Datang Corporation Renewable Power Co Ltd will report faster business growth, providing more opportunities for investors, he said.

Ningxia, located along the ancient Silk Road, encompasses a variety of tourism spots, including Shuidong gorge, the ancient rock paintings of Helan Mountain, the Ningxia Yellow River irrigation zone and the Western Xia imperial tombs.

The first generator for the Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station, an infrastructure project in Zambia which was built by Chinese companies, has been put into operation recently.

The Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station, constructed by Power Construction Corp of China, or PowerChina and China's hydropower engineering and construction company Sinohydro, plans to install five francis turbine power generating units, with a total installed capacity of 750 megawatts.

As the first large hydropower station invested by Zambia over the past the 40 years, the height of the Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station is 130.5 meters, with total concrete pouring of 1.3 million cubic meters.

The Chinese companies have completed important and great engineering, Zambian President Edgar Lungu said, adding the successful power generation of the Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station is a turning point for Zambia to become a net exporter of power in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The first batch of units of Baihetan Hydropower Station, the world's largest power plant currently under construction, started generating electricity on June 28, according to its operator China Three Gorges Corporation.

Straddling the southwest provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan, Baihetan has a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, second only to the world's largest Three Gorges Dam project, with a capacity of around 22.4 million kilowatts.

Wuhan will be the virtual intelligent electric field for smart grid leader Star Charge, which aims to build a "vehicle-mounted Three Gorges" based on the intelligent charging network of electric vehicles in the city, said Shao Danwei, founder of the company.

The mammoth green corridor generated more than 276 billion kilowatt-hours of clean power last year, a 5.34 percent year-on-year increase, said its operator China Three Gorges Corp. That is equivalent to saving 83 million metric tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 200 million tons, it said.
