A photo exhibition and a specially decorated tram car were launched in Guangzhou to commemorate the anniversary.

China's first tram that will be used on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau rolled off the production line Wednesday in Qingdao, East China's Shandong province.

With a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour, the two-carriage tram is capable of carrying 168 passengers, according to its manufacturer CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co.

The tram line is expected to be put into operation in Delingha, capital of the Haixi Mongol and Tibetan autonomous prefecture in Qinghai province, this year.

Li Yankun, a designer with the company, said that the tram was powered by a hybrid energy storage system that consists of a supercapacitor and lithium-titanate battery.

Li said that in normal operation the high-altitude tram would be powered by the supercapacitor, while the lithium-titanate battery will be used when the former is powered off.

"Such a hybrid energy storage system can shorten the charging time, ensure more reliable operation and protect the environment," Li said, adding that the tram could be charged in 30 seconds when it stops at stations.

In order to adapt to the plateau environment of Delingha at 3,000 meters above sea level, the tram is also equipped with specially designed electric system and cold-resistant materials.

It has delivered tram cars to Nanjing and Suzhou in Jiangsu province.

The aspired light rail is a fast tram expected to cover a distance of 66 kilometers with 11 stops, connecting the new administrative capital city with distant districts of Greater Cairo including Al-Salam city, Ramadan 10 city, Obour city, Badr city and Shorouk city.

In terms of transportation modes, bus and tram passengers dropped 23.5 percent, while urban rail passengers shrank 20.3 percent, according to the ministry.

Researched and manufactured by Chinese, it is the world's first hybrid electric tram, with hydrogen being the main power source, according to China Railway Rolling Corporation (CRRC) Tangshan Co, the maker of the tram.

"Only water will be emitted for powering the tram, thus it's totally environmentally friendly," said Li Ming, manager of the company's technology department.

The tram now operates on a 136-year-old railway in Tangshan and will be promoted to more cities at home and abroad.

According to Li, the tram, having three carriages with 66 seats, can run for 40 kilometers at a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour after being refilled with 12 kilograms of hydrogen.

"All of the technologies used in the tram are the latest in the world, with our independent intellectual property rights," Li said.
