But Shu pointed out that China's ultra-high voltage projects have proved that technology can be applied to enhance the efficiency of large-scale and long-distance transmission.

Established in China in 2016, GEIDCO, with the aim to build a globally interconnected smart grid with ultrahigh voltage grids as its backbone, is a nongovernmental, nonprofit international organization with member firms, associations, institutions and individuals dedicated to promoting sustainable development of energy worldwide.

"As renewable energies can cause volatility in voltage and frequent disturbances in grid operation during power transmission, it is necessary to develop new power systems to meet growing demand buoyed by increasing new energy installations," said Lin Boqiang, head of the China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy at Xiamen University.

Liu said China's power system has gradually developed into the world's largest in terms of transmission capacity and highest in terms of transmission voltage levels while featuring a multi-region power grid that integrates both AC and DC transmission.

With the emergence of the digital economy, related technologies are deeply integrating into the modern services sector, empowering China's real economy to accelerate its transformation and upgrade, said Xu Shaofeng, senior vice-president of Schneider Electric and head of medium voltage and services for the China market.

The Hami-Chongqing 800-kv ultra-high voltage direct current power transmission project, with a total investment of 28.6 billion yuan ($3.97 billion), has a rated transmission capacity of 8 million kilowatts.

Shu Yinbiao, president of the International Electrotechnical Commission and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, has said previously that China's current approach to expansion of ultrahigh voltage lines requires the bundling of electricity from renewables with power from coal plants.

Established in China in 2016, GEIDCO, with the aim of building a globally interconnected smart grid with ultrahigh voltage grids as its backbone, is a nongovernmental, nonprofit international organization with member firms, associations, institutions and individuals dedicated to promoting sustainable development of energy worldwide.

"While renewable energy fluctuates due to natural changes, fluctuations in power generation will cause issues such as voltage instability during power transmission, which will pose additional obstacles to maintaining grid stability.

In addition, it presents challenges to grid stability, such as voltage fluctuations, during power transmission," said Lin Boqiang, head of the China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy at Xiamen University in Fujian province.

"Besides, it causes volatility in voltage and frequency disturbances in grid operation during power transmission.

SGCC planned 38 ultrahigh voltage grid projects from 2021 to 2025 with a total investment of 380 billion yuan ($56.4 billion), as China's new energy saw rapid development in recent years.

Luo Zuoxian, head of intelligence and research at the Sinopec Economics and Development Research Institute, said, "Chances are high that more green power will be transmitted and the technology of ultrahigh voltage power transmission will play a key role, as green power in China's solar and wind-rich regions is expected to increase on a large scale in the future.

"Different from fossil fuels, new energy power generation poses higher requirements for the safe and stable operation of the power system because most new energies are intermittent resources, which experience rapid and random changes that make it hard for stable and steady power generation, causing volatility in voltage and frequency disturbances in grid operation.
