A good example of such green initiatives is Unilever's efforts to use alfalfa, a plant with small divided leaves and purple flowers grown by residents in Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region, in one of the body wash products of Lux.
Using alfalfa in its body wash product is part of a broader Go Green, Go Lux initiative Unilever has been pushing in Kayu township, Linzhou county of Tibet.
Since 2011, the company has partnered with the China Environmental Protection Association to grow alfalfa in the grasslands, improve the ecosystem, and alleviate poverty for local people.
The center now boasts purple alfalfa and tall fescue that thrive across nearly a thousand acres.
One mu of alfalfa grass could yield one metric ton of hay, which is worth 2,500 yuan ($359), said Cui Lihua, general manager of Shandong Lvfeng Agriculture Group Co Ltd, which runs the farm in Liupu, Wudi county.
"The 3,000 mu of alfalfa on the farm have been harvested five times, and when combined with the output of another 3,000 mu of oat grass, I'd say we've had quite good returns this year," Cui said.
Food crops including corn and wheat, if grown in saline soil, may not produce high yields, but salt-tolerant pasture grasses like alfalfa are a suitable choice, said Zhang Jian, a Party official of Liupu.
Alfalfa, which is well-known for its high yield and high-quality forage, has been utilized extensively as cattle feed.
These farms can produce 50,000 tons of alfalfa hay, 30,000 tons of alfalfa silage and 20,000 tons of oat hay annually, with the total output value reaching 140 million yuan, according to local authorities.
The power station operator has built cattle farms using alfalfa and other crops planted under the photovoltaic panels as breeding feed, providing a stable source of income for the locals.
The large amount is mainly devoted to scaling up farms growing alfalfa hay, a high quality animal feed for cows, as well as to refitting family-owned dairy farms, according to the ministry.
