Guitar makers are quite busy with overseas orders at a workshop in a guitar industrial park in Zheng'an county, Zunyi city, Southwest China's Guizhou province.

Dubbed as the "Guitar Capital of China", the scale of the industrial park has been expanding over the recent years.

Over 100 guitar and guitar accessory makers have settled in this park and the guitars made here are exported to over 40 countries and regions including the US and Brazil.

Keen on music, Schmidt is adept at playing musical instruments including the guitar, piano and accordion, and tried to compose and write songs since an early age.

In Tangwu town, more than 5,000 people are involved in the business of making over two million musical instruments each year, including guitar, bass, ukulele, banjo and mandolin, which are sold to more than 30 countries and regions, according to the township government.

Upon arriving in Tangwu, visitors are greeted by a towering guitar landmark and sculptures of musical instruments, serving as a testament to the town's instrument-making prowess.

Garcia, a professional bassist from Argentina, once bought a guitar made in Yangwu and was amazed by its quality.

In a guitar production base of Changyunda, workers are busy polishing, painting, tuning and assembling electric guitars.

"My main job is quality control, and as a professional bassist, I provide some of my own suggestions in production," said Garcia, who was seen debugging a guitar at the production base in early December in order to ensure a perfect sound and feel.

The production process of making one electric guitar involves eight major steps, with 70 percent of the work being done manually, said Zhang Longgang, manager of the company.

In a music studio on the outskirts of Moscow, Russian guitarist Grigory Novikov is plucking a classical guitar from Zheng'an county, reveling in the beautiful melody of a Russian classic.

Novikov, 44, began learning classical guitar in his youth.

"By chance, I acquired a guitar from Zheng'an county through a Chinese distributor, which deepened my understanding of Chinese guitar craftsmanship and music culture," he said.

He believes that even though the guitar is a Western musical instrument, Chinese-made guitars excel in terms of materials, craftsmanship and sound quality.

One of his students, who has been learning from Novikov online for many years, won an award at a competition for young guitar professionals this year, using a Chinese guitar that Novikov lent him.

The young man was so delighted with the guitar that he played it while recording videos, preparing for the competition and during this year's virtual competition.

Back in Zheng'an, a county more than 6,000 kilometers from Moscow, the Guitar Culture Industry Park receives a steady stream of orders from around the world.

Ten years on, Zheng'an county has become a guitar manufacturing center in China, producing over 6 million guitars annually, accounting for about one-fifth of China's and one-seventh of the world's guitar production.

"We do OEM production for more than 100 global brands, producing over 400,000 guitars annually, 95 percent of which are for export," said Zheng Chuanjiu, founder of Zunyi Shenqu Musical Instrument Manufacturing Co Ltd, the first guitar factory to settle in Zheng'an in 2013.

At a music instrument and equipment event held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California on April 13, Hakan Kutlu, general manager of a Turkish company engaged in guitar sales, said they order over 10,000 guitars annually from Zunyi Shenqu.

At the exhibition, another guitar company from Zheng'an, Natasha Musical Instrument Manufacturing Co Ltd, attracted the attention of guitar enthusiasts from various countries with its independently developed all-bamboo smart guitar.

Zhao Jianfeng, founder of Natasha, told reporters that they have invented an intelligent guitar made of bamboo, providing a richer playing experience through innovative technologies such as embedded sound cards and chips.

Someone brings a guitar and an amplifier, and after singing a song together, everyone gets to know each other.

Southwest China's Guizhou province saw its guitar exports rise by 440 percent year-on-year to 120 million yuan ($18.5 million) in the first half of this year, local customs said.

Zheng'an, a county in Zunyi city, is dubbed China's guitar manufacturing center.

The county has an industrial guitar park covering over 26 hectares and factory buildings of 400,000 square meters.

It's the largest guitar manufacturing base in the world.

In all, 56 producers of guitar and related spare parts are based out of the guitar industrial park in Zheng'an.

Zunyi Shenqu Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co Ltd, a major guitar retailer in the county, has developed three independent brands.

"The main consumer groups who buy guitars are schools, art training centers and guitar lovers.

There are e-cigarettes that resemble a car key, mini guitar or USB flash drive, and come in flavors like blueberry, green tea and lavender.

In 1995, Zheng Chuanjiu and his brother, natives of Zheng'an, went to Guangzhou in Guangdong province to work at a guitar plant, where they were later promoted to management positions.

In 2013, the two brothers started their own factory in Zheng'an, and the guitar business in the county started to emerge.

Last week, 20 guitar enterprises from Guizhou and other provinces signed deals with Zheng'an with a total investment of 840 million yuan ($122 million).

We also cooperate with e-commerce shopping platforms like Tmall and JD," said Zhao Shan, general manager of Guizhou Beijiaer Instruments Co Ltd, which is located in Zheng'an's international guitar industrial park.

"In the next few years, Zheng'an plans to establish the world's largest guitar museum, the most high-end guitar concert hall, the best guitar studio and the most comprehensive guitar production line," said Wu Qi, head of Zheng'an county.

"We will push forward the transformation of the guitar sector from production to self innovation, and upgrade the product structure from low-end to middle and high-end," he said.

The county has developed more than 20 guitar brands, as the local government has encouraged enterprises to strengthen technological innovation and brand building.

So far, Zheng'an has attracted 37 guitar makers and 17 related enterprises to set up companies there, and the county has become a center for guitar lessons, bands and performances.

Some vocational middle schools in the county have launched professional training programs, including classes focusing on production and playing, and all middle schools and primary schools in the county include guitar playing on their curricula.
